If you’ve been here before, you know I’m a big believer in the power of journaling, not just for kids and teens, but for anyone learning to be a little kinder to themselves. Journaling has this quiet magic to it. It helps us slow down, notice our thoughts, and offer compassion where criticism usually takes over.

I often remind clients that journaling doesn’t have to look one way. Some people love a special notebook and a pen, while others prefer the notes app, quick voice memos or typing a few sentences on their laptop. The format doesn’t matter! What matters is the intention: to connect with yourself honestly and gently.

Here are some journal prompts tailored to fostering more self-compassion. It encourages imperfection, curiosity, and self-kindness, the same things we try to nurture in therapy.

Journaling Prompts for Self-Compassion:

  1. What’s one thing I’m finding hard right now that could benefit from some curiosity and compassion?

  2. What emotion has been showing up for me lately, and what might it need from me?

  3. How can I infuse more intentional rest into my daily routine?

  4. What have I learned from my mistakes lately?

  5. When do I feel most at peace with myself?

  6. What’s one way I can soften my self-talk today?

  7. Where can I benefit from deeper self-exploration?

  8. How can I honor my inner child right now?

  9. What’s one small thing I can do to take care of myself this week?
